1. 사형을 집행할 수 있는 권한은 로마가 임명한 총독에게만 있었기 때문에 헤롯에게서 다시 돌아온 것이다.
2. 십자가형은 노예, 도적, 암살자, 등속 및 반란을 일으킨 로마의 속주민에게만 이루어지는 법정 최고형이었다. 가장 치욕스럽고 고통스러운 방식으로, 사형수는 채찍으로 매질을 당한 뒤 자신이 매달릴 횡대를 처형장소까지 운반했다.
3. 뜬금없어 보이는 문장 같지만 사실 다소 조소가 섞인 문장.
요한복음 18:33-35에 따르면 빌라도가 지저스에게 그대가 유대의 왕이냐고 묻자 지저스가 ‘그것은 너의 생각이냐 아니면 사람들이 날 그렇게 부르는 말이냐’고 되묻는다. 그것에 대한 답변이 ‘내가 유대인인가’. 즉, ‘내가 유대인이냐 내가 널 왜 왕으로 불러’ 라고 말하는 식으로 다른 사람들이 너에 대하여 나(빌라도)에게 한 말이란 걸 비꼰 것.
4. 개인적으로 굳이 damned이라는 단어를 골라 쓴 것은, 유다나 지저스나 서로의 방향은 달랐으나 저주받은 운명임을 뜻하는 것이 아닐까 생각한다.
5. 티베리우스 율리시스 카이사르 아우구스투스. 로마 제국의 2대 황제. 시저는 카이사르의 영어발음이다. 유대 백성들은 로마를 증오했으나 이때만큼은 빌라도를 이곳에 보낸 시저를 언급하며 그를 협박하고 있다.
6. 당시 정세가 혼란스러웠기에 자신을 메시아라 사칭하는 무리가 많았다. 빌라도도 지저스를 그중 하나로 생각한 모양.
7. 유월절에는 사형판결을 받은 자 중 한 명을 사면할 수 있었다. 빌라도도 그걸 알고 있었으나 대제사장들과 군중이 선택한 건 도둑 바라바였다.
8. 어떤 연출에선 지저스가 매달릴 십자가 위엔 INRI라 적힌 죄패가 있다. ‘나사렛 예수 유대 왕 IESVS NAZARENUS REX IVDAIORVM’ 의 약자이다. 라이센스에도 이게 있던 거 같은데. 이후 십자가를 들고 오른 곳은 골고다 언덕으로, 이는 해골의 곳 (THE PLACE OF THE SKULL)을 뜻한다.

15 Now it was the governor’s custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd.
16 At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas.
17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me
to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”
18 For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.
19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t
have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a
dream because of him.”
20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to
have Jesus executed.
21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.
“Barabbas,” they answered.
22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all
answered, “Crucify him!”
23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder,
“Crucify him!”
24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was
starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of
this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”
25 All the people answered, “Let his blood be on us and on our children!”
26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him
over to be crucified.
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole
company of soldiers around him.
28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,
29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!”
they said.
30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.
31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on
him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
32 As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they
forced him to carry the cross.
33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull).
34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he
refused to drink it.
35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
36 And sitting down, they kept watch over him there.
37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: THIS IS JESUS, THE
KING OF THE JEWS.

8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.
9 “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate,
10 knowing it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him.
11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.
12 “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked
them.
13 “Crucify him!” they shouted.
14 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder,
“Crucify him!”
15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus
flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called
together the whole company of soldiers.
17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it
on him.
18 And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”
19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on
their knees, they paid homage to him.
20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own
clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.
21 A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing
by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.
22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the
Skull).
23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.
24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each
would get.
25 It was the third hour when they crucified him.
26 The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS.

13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people,
14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people
to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your
charges against him.
15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing
to deserve death.
16 Therefore, I will punish him and then release him.”

18 With one voice they cried out, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”
19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for
murder.)
20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again.
21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed?
I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him
punished and then release him.”
23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their
shouts prevailed.
24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand.
25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder,
the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.
33 When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with
the criminals -- one on his right, the other on his left.
34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And
they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He
saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.”
36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar
37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”
38 There was a written notice above him, which read: THIS IS THE KING OF THE
JEWS.

32 다른 죄수 두 사람도 예수와 함께 사형장으로 끌려 갔다.
33 그들은 ‘해골’이라고 하는 곳에 이르러서, 거기에서 예수를 십자가에 못박고, 그 죄수들도 그렇게 하였는데, 하나는 그의 오른쪽에, 하나는 그의 왼쪽에 달았다.
34 그 때에 예수께서 말씀하셨다. “아버지, 저 사람들을 용서하여 주십시오. 저 사람들은 자기네가 무슨 일을 하는지 알지 못합니다.” 그들은 제비를 뽑아서, 예수의 옷을 나누어 가졌다.
35 백성은 서서 바라보고 있었고, 지도자들도 비웃으며 말하기를 “그가 남을 구원하였으니, 정말 그가 하나님의 그리스도이고, 택하심을 받은 자이거든, 자기나 구원하라지” 하였다.
36 군인들도 예수를 조롱하였는데, 그들은 가까이 가서, 그에게 신 포도주를 들이대면서
37 말하기를 “네가 유대인의 왕이거든, 너나 구원하여 보아라” 하였다.
38 예수의 머리 위에는 “유대인의 왕 예수”라고 쓴 죄패가 붙어 있었다.

33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you
the king of the Jews?”
34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “It was your people and your chief priests who handed
you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to
prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You are right in saying I am a
king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to
the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
38 “What is truth?” Pilate asked. With this he went out again to the Jews and said, “I
find no basis for a charge against him.
39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release `the king of the Jews’?”
40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken
part in a rebellion.
1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.
2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed
him in a purple robe
3 and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck
him in the face.
4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, “Look, I am bringing him out to you
to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”
5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said
to them, “Here is the man!”
6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify!
Crucify!” But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no
basis for a charge against him.”
7 The Jews insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because
he claimed to be the Son of God.”
8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,
9 and he went back inside the palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus,
but Jesus gave him no answer.
10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either
to free you or to crucify you?”
11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you
from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”
12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept shouting, “If you let
this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes
Caesar.”
13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a
place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha)
14 It was the day of Preparation of Passover Week, about the sixth hour. “Here is your
king,” Pilate said to the Jews.
15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify
your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge
of Jesus.
17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is
called Golgotha).
18 Here they crucified him, and with him two others -- one on each side and Jesus in
the middle.
19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: JESUS OF
NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near
the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.
21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write `The King of the
Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”
22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
33 빌라도가 다시 공관 안으로 들어가, 예수를 불러내서 물었다. “네가 유대 사람의 왕이냐?”
34 예수께서 대답하셨다. “네가 하는 그 말은 네 생각에서 나온 말이냐? 그렇지 않으면, 나를 두고 다른 사람들이 말하여 준 것이냐?”
35 빌라도가 말하였다. “내가 유대인이란 말이냐? 네 동족과 대제사장들이 너를 내게 넘겼다. 너는 무슨 일을 저질렀느냐?”
36 예수께서 대답하셨다. “내 나라는 이 세상에 속한 것이 아니다. 내 나라가 세상에 속한 것이라면, 내 부하들이 싸워서, 나를 유대 사람들의 손에 넘어가지 않게 했을 것이다. 그러나 내 나라는 이 세상에 속한 것이 아니다.”
37 빌라도가 예수께 “그러면 네가 왕이냐?” 하고 물으니, 예수께서 대답하셨다. “네가 말한 대로 나는 왕이다. 나는 진리를 증언하려고 태어났으며, 진리를 증언하려고 세상에 왔다. 진리에 속한 사람은, 누구나 내가 하는 말을 듣는다
38 빌라도가 예수께 “진리가 무엇이냐?” 하고 물었다. 빌라도는 이 말을 하고, 다시 유대사람들에게로 나와서 말하였다. “나는 그에게서 아무 죄도 찾지 못하였소.
39 유월절에는, 내가 여러분에게 죄수 하나를 놓아 주는 관례가 있소. 그러니 유대 사람의 왕을 놓아 주는 것이 어떻겠소?”
40 그들은 다시 큰소리로 “그 사람은 안 됩니다. 바라바를 놓아 주십시오” 하고 외쳤다. 바라바는 강도였다.
1 그 때에 빌라도는 예수를 데려다가 채찍으로 쳤다.
2 병사들은 가시나무로 왕관을 엮어서 예수의 머리에 씌우고, 자색 옷을 입힌 뒤에,
3 예수 앞으로 나와서 “유대 사람의 왕 만세!” 하고 소리 치고, 손바닥으로 얼굴을 때렸다.
4 그 때에 빌라도가 다시 바깥으로 나와서, 유대 사람들에게 말하였다. “보시오, 내가 그 사람을 당신들 앞에 데려오겠소. 나는 그에게서 아무 죄도 찾지 못하였소. 나는 당신들이 그것을 알아 주기를 바라오.”
5 예수께서 가시관을 쓰시고, 자색 옷을 입으신 채로 나오시니, 빌라도가 그들에게 “보시오, 이 사람이오” 하고 말하였다.
6 대제사장들과 경비병들이 예수를 보고서 “십자가에 못박으시오! 십자가에 못박으시오!” 하고 외쳤다. 그러자 빌라도는 그들에게 “당신들이 이 사람을 데려다가 십자가에 못박으시오. 나는 이 사람에게서 아무 죄도 찾지 못하였소” 하고 말하였다.
7 유대 사람들이 그에게 대답하였다. “우리에게는 율법이 있습니다. 그 율법을 따르면, 그는 마땅히 죽어야 합니다. 그가 자기를 가리켜서 하나님의 아들이라고 하였기 때문입니다.”
8 빌라도는 이 말을 듣고 더욱 두려워서,
9 다시 공관 안으로 들어가서 “네가 어디서 왔느냐?” 하고 예수께 물었다. 예수께서는 그에 게 아무 대답도 하지 않으셨다.
10 그래서 빌라도가 말하였다. “내게 말을 하지 않을 작정이냐? 내게는 너를 놓아 줄 권한도 있고, 십자가 형에 처할 권한도 있다는 것을 모르느냐?”
11 예수께서 대답하셨다. “위에서 주지 않으셨더라면, 나를 해할 아무런 권한도 네게 없었 을 것이다. 그러므로 나를 네게 넘겨 준 사람의 죄는 더 크다.”
12 이 말을 듣고서, 빌라도는 예수를 놓아 주려고 애썼다. 그러나 유대 사람들은 “이 사람을 놓아 주면, 총독님은 황제 폐하의 충신이 아닙니다. 자기를 가리켜서 왕이라고 하는 사람은, 누구나 황제 폐하를 반역하는 자입니다” 하고 외쳤다.
13 빌라도는 이 말을 듣고, 예수를 데리고 나와서, 리토스트론이라고 부르는 재판석에 앉았다. 리토스트론은 히브리 말로 가바다인데, ‘돌을 박은 자리’라는 뜻이다.
14 그 날은 유월절 준비일이고, 때는 낮 열두 시쯤이었다. 빌라도가 유대 사람들에게 “보시오, 여러분의 왕이오” 하고 말하니,
15 그들은 “없애 버리시오! 없애 버리시오! 그를 십자가에 못박으시오!” 하고 외쳤다. 빌라도가 그들에게 말하였다. “당신들의 왕을 십자가에 못박으란 말이오?” 대제사장들이 대답하였다. “우리의 왕은 가이사뿐입니다.”
16 그리하여 빌라도는, 예수를 십자가에 처형하라고, 그들에게 넘겨 주었다. 그들은 예수를 넘겨 받았다.
17 예수께서 친히 십자가를 메시고, ‘해골’이라 하는 데로 가셨다. 그 곳은 히브리 말로 골고다라고 하였다.
18 거기에서 그들은 예수를 십자가에 못박았다. 그리고 다른 두 사람도 예수와 함께 십자가에 달아서, 예수를 가운데로 하여 좌우에 세웠다.
19 빌라도는 또한 명패를 써서 십자가 위에 붙였다. 그 명패에다가 “유대 사람의 왕 나사렛사람 예수”라고 썼다.
20 예수께서 십자가에 달리신 곳은 성에서 가까우므로, 많은 유대 사람이 이 명패를 읽었다. 그것은 히브리 말과 라틴 말과 그리스 말로 적혀 있었다.
21 유대 사람의 대제사장들이 빌라도에게 “’유대 사람의 왕’이라고 쓰지 말고, ‘자칭 유대사람의 왕’이라고 쓰십시오” 하고 말하였으나,
22 빌라도는 “나는 쓸 것을 썼다” 하고 대답하였다.
